Gone Girl: A Book & Movie Review

My mom was actually the one who recommended this book to me; I believe she read it a couple years ago, and she absolutely loved it!  I was immediately interested in reading it too, since she is not a big reader but still loved it; I just didn’t think it would take me so long to get around to!  But, I am so glad that I did pick this book up.  And it was so much fun to read and then be able to immediately watch the movie after!  I absolutely loved this book (and it made my “Best Book of 2014”) and would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves thrillers!

Review:
Goodreads Summary:

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

Characters:

First of all, I want to say that I want to be very careful as to not spoil ANYTHING!  So, things might get a little vague.  As you can see in the Goodreads summary, Gone Girl follows a husband, Nick, as he searches for his missing wife, Amy.  These 2 characters are incredibly interesting as we find out more and more about their marriage and each of their pasts.  Even the side characters, such as Margo, Nick’s sister, and Amy’s parents, are very interesting to read about and add so much to the story.

Plot:

Again, I only really want to repeat what was in the Goodreads summary to avoid spoilers.  This story is broken up into 3 parts and focuses on Nick working with the police to find his wife, who went missing on their 5th wedding anniversary.  However, as the husband, Nick is the police’s number one suspect.

Writing Style:

This is probably the number one reason why I loved this book!  The writing style is amazing; the way that Gillian Flynn weaves this story together and how she thinks of every single detail is remarkable.  I especially love how Flynn writes Amy’s diary, so even though she is missing we still get a dual perspective.

Movie Review:

Shortly after reading this book, I watched the movie.  And wow!  This movie was amazing!  I absolutely loved Ben Affleck in this role, and Rosamund Pike was absolutely incredible in her role as Amy.  I highly recommend watching this movie after reading the book!

Have you read this book yet?  Or have you seen the movie?  What did you think?  I can’t wait to read more by Gillian Flynn!
